Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured inside my shared studio space in St. Charles, Missouri. The warehouse is divided into more than a dozen zones for artists to paint, sculpt, model and photograph.

Time

In the studio, all time stops. The windowless space make controlling lighting simple, but moments can easily slip away.

Lighting

Large soft boxes create even lighting. I this case the rectangular soft box is up and to the left of the camera. Notice the reflections in the models eyes.

Equipment

Canon 5d Mark III Paul C. Buff Alien Bees Handheld camera Cybersync triggers. Large vinyl sheet draped over a banquet table

Inspiration

I am always looking for a way to show something new and interesting. The model pictured inspires me and embrace the adventure of exploration. We tried many different poses this day, but the upside down with long hair hit the mark.

Editing

For all portraits I remove any skin blemishes, brighten the eyes and accentuate the make-up.

In my camera bag

I vary the complement of my bag. Stretching use the atypical lens for the situation encourages creativity and ingenuity. Amplifying the distortion of a wide angel or embracing the compression of zoom makes me smile.

Feedback

Composition rules were created for a reason. Follow them diligently then break them intentionally
