There are many legends about the origin of the name of this street , narrow and cobbled with wedge stones, typically Portuguese. One of them is that it was a step where inmates sentenced to death were taken to the side of the river to be shot. Until the 1940s it was called Ansina, but the reason for its current name is unknown, about which there are different versions. One alludes to the brothels that were in it, frequented by sailors who sighed for prostitutes. Another, to the sighs of those sentenced to death, who were brought down to drown them in the river, and a third to a young woman stabbed while waiting for her crush.
