Here we are inside the arena!
The amphitheatre of El Jem is an exceptional testimony of Roman architecture especially that of monuments built for show purposes, in Africa. Located in a plain in the center of Tunisia, this amphitheatre, built entirely of freestone, is neither dug nor leaning against a hill. In this he resumes the model of the Coliseum of Rome without being a simple copy of the Flavian edifice. Its dimensions (148 m long axis and 122 m long axis) and its capacity (estimated at 35,000 spectators) rank it undeniably among the largest amphitheatres in the world. Its facade has three stages of Corinthian or composite arcades.
It was probably used for gladiatorial shows, chariot races and other circus games.
Inside, the monument has retained most of the support infrastructure of the bleachers. The podium wall, the arena and the underground are practically intact. This architectural and artistic work erected around 238 apr. AD is an important milestone for understanding the history of Roman Africa. The amphitheatre of El Jem also testifies to the prosperity of the small city of Thysdrus at the time of the Roman Empire.
