When we arrived in Vilnius, we were caught off guard by the harsh winter weather. The temperatures reached -23 degrees Celsius! During our first evening in the city, we set out to capture a panorama of the Vilnius Skyline from the Gediminas’ Tower, To get there, we walked along the frozen banks of the Neris River.

As we made our way, we were amazed by the large chunks of ice floating along the river. The sight reminded me of a similar winter experience I had during my studies in Frankfurt when the Oder River almost froze over. I knew I had to capture this moment with my camera.

Using a slower shutter speed, I managed to capture the flow of the ice chunks on the Neris River before continuing on to the Vilnius Castle. I’m glad I took the shot when I did. Because the following day, the river had completely frozen over, and the ice was no longer moving.

Despite the cold, we persevered and continued to explore the beautiful city of Vilnius, taking in the stunning views from the Gediminas’ Tower. I’m grateful for the opportunity to capture the beauty of the Neris River in such a unique and rare moment.
