Taking pictures of a thunderstorm has its own charm. Especially while standing on a balcony on the 19th floor.
It was more of a coincidence than planned. Tomas and me actually wanted to use the view to take photos of the sun when it’s setting behind the Berliner Dom and TV tower. Rain wasn’t announced before 11pm, so we were surprised by the clouds. Luckily the balcony was a bit sheltered, so that we could keep on shooting. And when the storm passed, it left us with that wonderful pink sky.

Beautiful shot, I couldn’t locate this exact building, but got in one nearby. Check out mine sometime. Well done!

Location
This photo was taken on the balcony of a high building in the center of Berlin. I wanted to capture the sunset and was rather surprised by the thunderstorm. I never attempted to capture a lightning before, so I was really happy when I saw the resultsTime
This shot was taken on a summer evening. The storm already almost passed, that's why you're able to see some colors from the sunset.Lighting
Obviously, most bolts of lightning always strike in the TV Tower in Berlin, since it's the tallest structure around. However, it was important to also capture the details of the skyline. Since my camera back then didn't have a high dynamic range, I shot several exposure brackets and used them to get to the final image.Equipment
Canon 500D, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5Inspiration
It's one of the iconic skyline views in Berlin and I never captured it before. Once I was there and the storm started, I thought for a second to go back inside (after all, standing on a balcony (though covered from above), isn't necessarily the safest option in a thunderstorm). But the sky clearing up like that was an opportunity you simply couldn't pass on, and I counted on the TV tower to attract the lightings :)Editing
Yes, due to the limitations of the Canon 500D, this final result is a merged image out of 3 exposures (+2,0,-2 EV)In my camera bag
My equipment changed a lot since back then, but I always always always carry my ultra wide angle lens. Specializing in what I call destination photography, I capture skylines frequently and that lens allows me to capture the entire scene.Feedback
Like I said, I never shot a lightning bolt before. But it turned out to be easy actually if you're willing to use some minor post-processing. Capture the scene as you'd imagine it for your final shot and then just keep on shooting again and again and again until you capture a lightning bolt you'd like to use. The lightning bolt here was captured with f/19, 3s, Iso 100.
