Location
At the ring of Brodgar on Orkney's mainland. This is an official Historic Scotland world heritage siteTime
Just about 20 or 30 minutes before sunset... Well it must have been around 23:00 as it was the day after midsummer.Lighting
The light was, frankly, pretty grim. I had been sitting there for hours , walking around and hoping for improvement. Just before sunset there were still no colours, but a dramatic sky and at last good light, albeit backlight for the stones The next day was worse.Equipment
A Pentax 67 with 55 mm Takumar, Fuji Provia and a Land Rover. No tripod. No flash. Several cups of tea to keep hands and belly warm.Inspiration
The place itself is inspiring. I spent hours walking around and looking at angles. Had read that some stones are lined up to the midsummer sun. If you have only 10 shots on a roll of 120 you can't take lots of different views.Editing
Sure. It is called E36 development. I scanned this tranny again in 2016 after I bought a good second hand scanner, which brought out far more details. As the colours were grim browns and greens I put it into Silver efex .In my camera bag
These days you can't buy any 120 rolls in my country. So I pulled out my old Nikon lenses and I usually take my D4, a wonderful Venus wide angle or the Nikon 18 f3.5, my 70-180 macro lens or a Tamron 24- 135 if it has to be light. And often a Tamron 300 2.8 adaptall with a TC. That does for birds and other Tele needs. If it is low light I use a Nikkor 55 1.2 and a sigma 85 1.4. not much autofocus in all that.Feedback
Yes, this applies to many cold places Bring tea bags, a cooker and time and go before or after the tourists. Walk around respectfully and find the best spots. Have patience and an old Toyota or Landrover to sleep near the place. Now I live in a cold place again, I can only say add warm boots to the list.
