The Loon chicks have hatched in certain areas. On Lake Belle Taine, near Park Rapids, Minnesota, this chick hopped on the Mama for a ride. The chicks can only ride for 10 days or so, then they are too big. It is fun to watch both parents busily hunt for minnows for the chick. The parents are understandably very protective of their chick. Until the bird is big enough to fly, the only defense is to dive or swim away in the water. All Loons are poorly adapted for land travel. As we watched the chick mounted, rested and dismounted mama on this cool June morning.
