Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken on the shores of beautiful Lake Symington on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State.

Time

Time of day was about 6:30AM, early January.

Lighting

The wispy clouds created sort of a soft focus filter as the setting moon shone through. The sun was getting ready to rise behind me. Fun fact: The full moon always sets at sunrise --it's the law ;-)

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon P900, zoomed to about 1600mm equiv, hand-held (that's right, no tripod!)

Inspiration

Spooky winter clouds, bare trees and a full moon -- what more could you ask?

Editing

Actually, I had to get rid of a tiny bit of yellow fringing at the bottom of the lunar edge. That's about it.

In my camera bag

These days, I usually just carry that Nikon plus an Oly OMD EM1 with an ultra-wide Samyang 7.5mm.

Feedback

My advice would be to get a big SD card and shoot your scene to death. It looks like I took 65 shots of the moon that morning, creeping around the park in the darkness, looking for all the best angles! As my mentor used to say, you can tell a professional by the size of his wastebasket.
