Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this in 2017 on vacation in Venice -- photographer's paradise!

Time

I dont really remember time of day. We'd get up early and just walk around till bedtime, shooting and/or eating!

Lighting

I was in kind of an architectural valley, with tall a building behind me. This made for a lovely soft open shade.

Equipment

I shot this with an Oly OMD E-M1 and my Lumix 7-14mm

Inspiration

There was lots of stuff going on when I looked up -- the contrast in texture between the brick and the cloth, the drama of the upward angle, and the artistic arrangement of the yellow among the white. Was this done deliberately to catch the eye of a wandering tourist?

Editing

Yes I simplified it a bit in Topaz Studio to give it a slightly painterly feel.

In my camera bag

On vacation, I generally carry two bodies, an Oly OMD E-M1 and a Lumix GH2, and a range of lenses: Samyang 7.5 fisheye, Lumix 7-14mm, Lumix 14-50mm, Lumix 45-200mm.

Feedback

Keep your camera in your hand, not in your bag. Bring plenty of SD cards and shoot whatever catches your eye, dont be too critical. My mentor used to say you can tell a professional by the size of his wastebasket.
