Behind The Lens

Location

Old chimp was taken at the zoo Tampa.

Time

9:00 Am

Lighting

The chimpanzee was sitting in the shade relaxing and watching us as we watched him.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon 5D Mark 3 on a tripod.

Inspiration

The zoo at Tampa is known for its wonderful chimpanzee and orangutan ???? exhibits

Editing

The raw image was processed in Lightroom and then final touches were down in Adobe photoshop. Using curves I darkened the background slighted and highlighted his eyes.

In my camera bag

Normally in my bag, if I am headed to the zoo for a photo shoot, I pack my canon 5d with my canon 70-200 L lens with a 2x extender. I am always bring a tripod and a cable release too. I often bring a strobe light to supply some fill light to brighten the eyes of the animals.

Feedback

Patience...sitting and watching the animals and studying their behaviors and habits. Planning your trip when the light is best will improve your zoo photos, too. Using a lens with a longer focal length with help you to get a more intimate portrait and also blur your background.
