Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the stage of a theater of Pistoia during a photo session with photographer friends

Time

It was almost 1pm when Giulia and Elisa had them positioned to make this photo. It was 17 February 2019 and after a study of lights and shadows, I took the picture.

Lighting

For this photo, I used two large LED lights positioned high up, sideways above the models. I wanted the light to create a cut on their bodies to create almost a luminous shape around the figure. The strong contrast is wanted and made like when I make similar shots on the beach in full sun. I then placed the 2 stop photo below it.

Equipment

I shot with my Nikon D5 equipped with Nikon Nikon 70-200. Iso 160; time 1/160; focal length 70mm; spot detection. I used two Manfrotto lamps positioned at the top and behind the models

Inspiration

I positioned the models with faces turned in the opposite way to create this shot (made directly in black and white). The tied hair stood out the faces and so I tried to give value to this particular.

Editing

As already said, I shot directly in black and white applying a red filter directly in the settings of my reflex. This to have already (since the shot) a very good skin. In post production I accentuated the contrasts with the raw camera and removed the "clone stamp" from the details in the background that bothered the observer's eye.

In my camera bag

Currently I always start for my photo sessions with the two Nikon camera bodies (D850 and D5) and the three basic Nikon lenses composed from 14-24; 24-70 and 70-200. The 85 f / 1.4 and the 2x duplicator (also Nikon) is often present.

Feedback

The advice is to observe the subjects and enhance what strikes you the most. In this case the faces are very clean and with tied hair. The position of the models' faces is desired and is what (in my opinion) gives value to the shot. The placement of the firewaves was also important, as they almost burned the contours of the face and body but, without losing the structure of the other details. The red filter has prevented me from losing my time for skin treatment in camera raw
