Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Diamond Beach in Iceland I've want to visit this location for years and in January my wife and I finally managed to get there and it didn't disappoint!

Time

This was our second visit of the day, we had already scouted along the beach in the morning and now we returned late in the afternoon hoping for some colour but unfortunately there was thick cloud along the horizon so we were left with an overcast sky.

Lighting

With an overcast sky I knew it wouldn't be difficult to slow the shutter speed down so that I could catch a bit of movement in the photo, plus with the water drawing back it lightened the shot as well.

Equipment

The shot was taken with my Canon 5ds and a Sigma 24-70 lens on my tripod. I also used a soft graduated filter a 0.6 so that I didn't blow any highlights as I slowed the shutter speed down.

Inspiration

I remember seeing photographs from this beach with the sun showing through the ice as the water receded and I always thought I'd love to be able to do that. Although we didn't have the light I had been watching these to pieces of ice change colour as the water pulled back past them. The ice there is so blue it looks unreal but I thought the solid ice against the moving water was quite stunning to see and capture.

Editing

A little few tweaks to contrast and brightness in lightroom to make the ice really come alive was about all I did.

In my camera bag

I normally carry around my Canon 5ds with both the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 because it's a great lens and of coarse the Canon 16-35 f2.8 for if I want to shoot a little wider. I have my trusty Canon 6d as a back up body in case I want to do any night shots as it's still an amazing camera for low light levels and of coarse with the 16-35 f2.8 an ideal partnership.

Feedback

Diamond Beach is an amazing location where you will be spoilt for choice for your iceberg shots, but if you do go with a set idea in your mind be prepared to be flexible. There isn't always a blazing sunrise/sunset but there are always options on how to approach your goal and capture something a little different.
