This photo is of the Moeraki Boulders, a collection of large stones that sit on the beach and in the water on the South Island of New Zealand. Its a popular spot with tourist and photographers alike. It is just outside of Oamaru on route SH 1.Time
This is one of my favourite images of my recent trip to New Zealand, we had stayed just down the road on the beach in a motorhome the night before as I wanted to arrive early. I knew it would be busy and I wasn't wrong by 8.30 there were coach loads of people turning up. I was so glad that we had made the effort to get there early!Lighting
There was a lot of cloud about that morning and I didn't think it was going to clear and then all of a sudden the sun shone though, I had intended to do both normal and longer exposures and the light just added to the beauty!Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 6D with a 16-35mm lens on a tripod with cable release. Using Lee Filters to slow the water and boost the colour as well.Inspiration
I had seen a photo of one of these boulders before I left the UK, in fact it may have been this very one and I just knew I had to visit the place and see it for myself. I would like to say I had it all planned out...but it was just luck we happened to be there that day with the water just coming in and the sun coming up. It was a truly magical experience and I can't wait to go back and spend more time there!Editing
I tend to do most of my editing in Lightroom but I did use Photoshop in this case to really try and boost the colours a bit with a photo filter, trying hard to recapture what my minds eye had seen.In my camera bag
Always my Canon 6D with both 16-35 and 24-105 lens. A selection of Lee filters because I do enjoy messing around with them and they make me think and slow down a bit. Lots of spare cards and batteries, especially on the New Zealand trip because there was just so much to photograph!Feedback
Definitely plan your time better than I did and check the tides. Arrive early because it does get very busy with most of the stones getting climbed on most of the time. Allow yourself plenty of time to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy it!
