Distantly related to raccoons, coatimundis are found in a variety of wet and dry habitats stretching between Arizona and Argentina.Their diet includes insects, reptiles, rodents, eggs, carrion nuts and fruits. They are particularly fond of prickly pear. Using their keen sense of smell and powerful claws they are able to find and dig out food that is not readily visible. Unlike raccoons, they are mostly active during the day.
