Location
I was on one of my many photography journeys traveling the pacific northwest states. This image was taken in Lakeview Oregon, I was actually out taking pictures of old barns and architecture in the rural countryside when I spotted a field with old vehicles just off a main road. Drove into the field and parked then wandered through the tall dried grasses and snapped several shots at different angles and positions of the rusting old vehicles, this one was the most intriguing capture in my opinion.Time
As usual when traveling in my motorhome I'm typically a slow starter, this was my last stop of the day as I had to prepare for another travel day the following morning. This capture was at 2:09 in the afternoon in October on a mostly cloudy coolish fall day as a weather system was blowing through the high desert plains.Lighting
It was a blustery fall day, as I was shooting with occational rain showers, when I arrived at this location the clouds were starting to break providing just the right amount of light to where I didn't have to bump the ISO up much. I was hand holding as I walked through the field of broken down vehicles therefore, there were no direct sun issues with extranious reflections to deal with and the colors were acuratley transcribed in the raw data creating deeper tones on the rusting metal.Equipment
My camera is a Nikon D750, was using my go to 24.0-120.0 mm f/4.0 lens. I was capturing multiple images so I was hand holding rather than trying to deal with a tripod, this capture was 1/160th sec at f/16, ISO 200 so I could capture the scenery in the background clearly.Inspiration
Old vehicles always capture my attention, they are patient and typically don't move, decay provides those special looks and preserve a tonality which is hard for me to pass up. This particular image captured this old workhorse with no hood and miscellaneous metal debris in the bed. An additional inspiration was the tall browning grass in the field and the lone A-frame holding a roll of barbed wire next to the vehicle. The overall scene pulled me into the framing of this object rusting in the open field which also inspired the name, 'Left Behind'.Editing
This particular image was pretty darned good with normal processing however I wanted to make this a piece of art therefore, I took extra processing steps to push it over the edge. My post started in Lightroom with basic adjustments in shadows/highlights/whites/blacks/lens corrections/leveling prior to moving into Photoshop. In Photoshop I used Topaz filters and On1 filters with a series of PS adjustments including clean up of extraneous non value added stuff around the scene for the 1st image which was step 1. For step 2 with the artistic post I took the image back into Photoshop where I applied 2 textures, 2 border edge adjustments, with 3 Luminar filter adjustments orton/structure/vignette, several other layers painting in and out to define the overall canvas. In my camera bag
I carry two camera bags with my D750 and backup D70 camera's, 5 lens's that incorporate a wide range of capacity, extra batteries for each camera, remote camera shutter, flash unit, tripod, miscellaneous cleaning articles, journal, rain guards and battery chargers. The key to success is to always have all of the equipment for any photog opportunity.Feedback
When your on a photo journey always carry all of your equipment so you are prepared for any shooting opportunity. Be on the lookout for objects, architecture, vehicles, landscape, seascape, bridges or interesting people and scenes as you travel around, take the opportunity to get out of your car and wander around a bit, be brave. Aways dress in layers with a pair of good walking shoes or boots, prepare for wet conditions just in case. It's a good idea to have someone else with you as a spotter for additional opportunities that you can miss - two sets of eyes are better than one.
