Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Eastern Washington while out looking for locations to shoot along the upper Columbia River

Time

This shot was taken in the afternoon around 3:30 to 4:00 PM, the sun was very low in the sky and it was a foggy overcast day, just right for photo exploration.

Lighting

The sun was at my back providing just the right amount of light, very foggy overcast day just as the sun was going to set over the Cascade Mountain range.

Equipment

I was out shooting most of the day and I had my camera set up on the tri-pod. I walked through the deep grass, set up my tri-pod, fooled with different ISO, shutter and aperture settings on my Nikon D70. This shot was at ISO 500, f/5.6, 1/320 sec with my 18-300 Nikor lens.

Inspiration

This was toward the end of the day and I was looking for old farm houses, ranches and stables to photograph. I saw this place out the corner of my eye and was able to take a road that led down to the river. I parked the car, grabbed my gear and walked about a 1/4 of a mile to this location. In addition to this run down house was a stable and outhouses that were in similar disrepair. The entire scene captured my attention, I was glad I found this opportunity.

Editing

Performed some minor Photoshop adjustments, curves and levels to really bring out the texture in the wood on the building and to highlight the foreground grasses with all the different colors that were present. The final step in the workflow was done in Lightroom to add the metadata, description, copyright information and to place my watermark on the saved JPG.

In my camera bag

I carry all my equipment with me everywhere I go, two camera bodies (D70 and D750), 6 batteries, two tri-pods (with misc tools for repairs), extra cards, flash light, remote release, 5 lenses, cleaning equipment, several different filters, flash, cell phone and IPad. This actually is two bags stuffed to the brim so I do go prepared.

Feedback

Eastern Washington or any rural area has some very unique and captivating areas to find appealing photography opportunities. I was actually motor-homing the week I captured this shot and with time you can find anything to shoot. Be aware of what is around you, look for ideal objects, landscapes, people and have a plan for what you are actually out to capture. Oh - and have someone with you to spot what you don't see, someone with a good eye.
