I have never figured out for sure why monkeys exert such tractor-beam-like attraction on humans. Maybe because they are our closest relatives? Who knows... It has been a while since I last watched simian activity in the zoo, but I have always likened it to a 12A classified film: with a bit of luck, mild peril with the occasional sex scene might be in the script. In any case, such facial expressions are unavoidable. I think he is both pensive and cheeky and he is reading your mind, H.

Behind The Lens

Location
Elche, Spain.
Time
The photo was taken, I think around about 11am.
Lighting
The light was very bright and contrasty. The sun was quite harsh...then to my joy appeared some cloud cover and a lovely light which was perfect just to catch my subject at that moment.
Equipment
I used my Nikon D5200 with my Nikkor 55-300mm lens. I like using my tripod when shooting at a focal length of 300, so I had this with me and used it for this capture.
Inspiration
I loved the way the chimp was squished into the V of the branch and the way he was not raising his head but just peering at me by raising his eyes under that overhanging brow!! I thought the expression was priceless.
Editing
I used enhance in ON1 and a slight tweak to saturation...I also added a photo filter to make the image slightly richer.
In my camera bag
I normally carry my D5200, spare batteries, cleaning pack, remote and two lenses...Sigma 18-250mm and the Nikkor 55-300mm.
Feedback
Spanish summers give a harsh light and sometimes this creates a lot of contrasty...be patient...wait until the light changes or maybe trying a different POV can sometimes help. With animals it's great when you capture their real character, so try to remember this when shooting...focus on the eyes and try and get as much of the personality you can...again patience or sometimes, if lucky like me, they'll look straight at ya at the right time!!
