Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside an antique/second-hand store in Florida's Panhandle area.

Time

It was in the middle of the afternoon in the middle of the week in middle of February.

Lighting

The weather conditions - sunny, but overcast - and the time of day provided sufficient natural light to take this shot.

Equipment

"Antique Store" was taken with a Sony FinePix S5700 camera with a fixed lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Honesty and humor are integral parts of my personality. So when the opportunity presents itself I love to inject humor into my photos (I actually have created an album on my Viewbug page dedicated to funny scenes I have shot). To me the sign "We Buy Junk & Sell Antiques," outside this antique/second-hand shop spoke loads about its owner. In all likelihood the shopkeeper took life and business seriously but not too seriously. The scene also suggests a sense of clutter outside - and, most likely, inside - the shop. This business of life is not always neat and tidy, the owner, seemed to be telling me. I also liked the fact that this shopkeeper was being honest and humorous with potential customers, and in the process, revealing not only his or her personality, but that of his shop.

Editing

I wanted the sign to 'stand out.' So I saturated the color slightly. To me this image was not so much about trying to perfect this picture through post-processing. It was about getting the message across and having some fun.

In my camera bag

I now carry in my bag a Canon EOS 1300D with a 18-55 mm. standard lens, a 58mm, HD 22x Telephoto lens, and a 58 mm, 43x wide Angle with Macro Lens, a tripod and a handful of filters.

Feedback

Photography is very much about weather conditions, patience, planning ahead and now, more than ever, about post-processing. To me photography can also be about revealing personality - yours and that of your subject. Have fun shooting pictures. But if the opportunity presents itself, take the time to poke some fun too.
