What a lovely winter photo! Reminds me of a Wyeth painting.

I love the red barns and other buildings, but the tangle of branches in the foreground is a distraction. If you moved to the right, or left & got rid of the branches, it would be a much more compelling composition.

I'm a sucker for red structures in the winter!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our local Animal Farm just following a winter snowfall. I was just heading out onto one of the trails that goes around the farm perimeter when I stopped to snap this pic.

Time

This was about mid-morning on a week-day. I'd just dropped my kids at school and I knew the park would be beautiful after a fresh snowfall.

Lighting

The sky was grey as it had just snowed and was still a bit overcast. However, I think this makes the red barns "pop" even more.

Equipment

I have a Canon PowerShot SX520 HS camera. It's really a basic point-and-shoot camera but I'm just amateur so it works!

Inspiration

The Animal Farm is a popular landmark in my town and the park is exceptionally beautiful after a snowfall. I was going for a walk as I would normally but loved how the bridge and barns looked in the fresh snow.

Editing

I play around with photos in Google Photos to adjust the lighting and colour to make the image "pop".

In my camera bag

I love hiking so travel pretty light; I carry my Canon Powershot camera and a 3" tripod as well as my more durable (and waterproof) handheld camera (a FUJIFILM FinePix XP130).

Feedback

I always try to keep my eyes open for a photo opportunity wherever I am. Don't be afraid, shoot away and learn from what you like and what doesn't quite "work". In particular, I look for natural "frames" or elements to draw the eye to the area of focus; I find these elements make for great photos!
