Beautiful capture! Love waterfalls...even 'frozen in time' ones!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Johnston Canyon, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, while visiting for a family vacation. This is the lower falls (about a 1km hike into the canyon).

Time

This photo was taken on a cold December afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting in the canyon was limited given the location. I just moved around as much as I could to try to get the best angle.

Equipment

I shot this picture with my Olympus TG-817 point and shoot camera. It's waterproof and shockproof -- perfect for trekking down an icy canyon trial to the waterfall! No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

When I saw the waterfall the beauty of it took my breath away. I know many people will never have the opportunity to visit this place so I wanted a picture to share so that all could marvel at this marvelous world we live in.

Editing

Minimal post processing was used. I had to play around with the colours a bit (whites, saturation, etc.) but nothing too fancy.

In my camera bag

As I am an amateur photographer, my camera bag is very minimal; I have my Olympus TG-817 for when we're hiking or boating and my primary camera is my Canon Powershot SX520 HS, which has great zoom capabilities. I also have a mini tripod and battery chargers for both cameras!

Feedback

One thing I've found (and this may be because I am still a beginner in this photography world) is that taking lots and lots of shots helps me to find the best combination of timing, light and colours. I took many shots of this waterfall from various angles and different distances and was pleased to see when I got back to my computer that there was one that I could really work with. I often take multiple pictures of the same thing, driving my family crazy, but it's what I love to do!
