Location
Andenes, Vesterålen, North Norway. Vesterålen islands are an undiscovered natural wonder rich paradise. Every one has heard of Lofoten and Tromsø but not so many where I live. I actually hope it stays that way.Time
Around midday but that is fairly irrelevant here as in the summer we have 24 hrs of light anyway.Lighting
Nothing to say about the sunEquipment
Just my trusty Nikon 810 and Sigma 120-300 f2.8. You cannot use a tripod on a boat. Not a small one anyway. This was taken from a moving RIB. Hand held so a high shutter speed and a strong arm are needed.Inspiration
I have been on many whale safaris here but this one was very special. Orcas in the summer are a chance encounter as they are very mobil. This encounter was even more special because they were jumping so much. Right behind the boat and really close. Even my friend Marten Briehl who runs the whale safari in Andenes has not seen this behaviour before.Editing
There was not mush Post necessary. Just the usual contrast etc.In my camera bag
I have a lot of kit because I teach photography here in this paradise. I normally select and cary just that needed for the day. In this case my sigma 120-300 was perfect. The nikon 16-35 f4 took care of the landscapes on the way home. I normally have my trusted 105 macro with me too just in case.Feedback
This is more or less pure luck that such a thing happens in nature but if it does and you are not prepared for it you will miss it. I did the same as I do for my eagle safaris. Prepared the camera before I went onto the boat as I new what I was going out there for. That still does not help when the whales start to jump. The technique that is then necessary is too look down the barrel of the lens over the top of it. if you see something like a whale breaking the surface you need to start the focus before you have it to your eye and start shooting as soon as you have it near your face.
