Location
I live in the Vesterålen islands North Norway. I run a tourist business here. We take people on trips to Andenes which is 2.30 hrs from where we stay. South to North and back again. Followed by a few hrs out in the boat.Time
This was not optimal time for perfect pictures but when such an opportunity presents itself. Who Cares.Lighting
Again the light was not optimal but this is such a chance you just cannot pass it up.Equipment
My trusty Nikon D810 fitted with a sigma 120-300 f2.8 is my weapon of choice for eagles and whales. It has served me well upto now despite numerous boat trips in all weathers and temperatures. From -25 to +25.Inspiration
I get to go out on these trips free when I take our guests to a whale safari. Thats the bonus of doing what we do here. I have been doing this job for 10 years now. We do not do that many whale safaris but this one was of course the best I have ever been on. The orcas where playing all around the boat. It was just such a breath taking experience to be out in this environment with these beautiful creatures. I have thousands of images with there fins and breaking water etc. This was amazing.Editing
Only the normal contrast and exposure tweaks. In my camera bag
I have an extensive kit bag now that I have built up over the years. I teach photography. Live in a spectacular place that has wonderful light. Aurora and eagles. For all that I use a lot of different lenses. D300 d810 AW1 for kayaking and diving. Tamron 70-24 f2.8 Sigma 120-300 f2.8 nikon 16-35 f4 50mm 1.4 105 macro sigma 20 1.4 and a few others. Several tripods that i rent out.Feedback
Just be lucky in this case. It is a rare occasion that orcas jump in nature and to be there at the right place at the right time is just an absolute privilege. These animals most definitely do not belong in a fish tank. They belong out in the wild free. they are so intelligent it is a crime to keep them in captivity.
