I live in the Arctic and work in tourism. I have plenty of chances to take tourists out on whale safari. Its always a bonus to find these creatures out free in the fjord.Time
This was about midday. In the winter the days are very short. Only about 5 hours of what we call light. It does not stay dark for 6 months like you keep getting told on the TV. The further North you go the shorter the days get. Its only totally dark for 6 months on the North Pole. Here the sun does not rise for two months but there is still enough light to take some wonderful images.Lighting
Due to the high shutter speed needed for these wonderful creatures, The lack of light, and the peed they move it is not easy to get images like these.Equipment
My trusty D850 sigma 120-300 F2.8 and the weapon of choiceInspiration
When I am out with tourists my camera is always ready. This one I tried to include some environment. The island Senja is in the background.Editing
Just a bit of contrast and lifting of the darks. Not a lot really or as little as possible. In my camera bag
I have aside selection of tripods lenses and other assorted stuff because it is amazing how many people come here to take images of the Aurora for example without even a tripod. I teach photography too so need a good selection of kit.Feedback
Please don't even visit these creatures in captivity let alone photograph them as you are just encouraging them to keep more in captivity. The wonderful intelligent creatures need to be free. There is nothing better than a chance meeting or a planned tour were you can dive with them in their natural environment.
