Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo at Penrhyn Castle Rail Museum in North Wales. There are a number of old engines and carriages there which are related to the production and shipment of slate in times gone by. This image is of part of a leaf spring on an engine.

Time

It was taken in the early afternoon indoors in the museum in fairly dim lighting.

Lighting

The light was a mix of sparse electric light and some daylight though various windows.

Equipment

I used an Olympus EM1 mk2 mirrorless micro 4/3rds camera and an Olympus M.25mm f/1.2 prime lens... aperture f/5 .. ISO 200 .. Shutter 1/8th second .. The camera was hand-held in ambient light.

Inspiration

I am admirer of engineering equipment, both old and new and like to take macro images of equipment parts. This particular leaf spring was brightly coloured against the dark fittings and the Question mark shaped clamp lent itself well to competition entries in my view at the time.

Editing

The photo was taken in RAW and therefore inevitably there is always need for some editing to the contrast and sharpness of the image.

In my camera bag

I have at least one Olympus Mirrorless Camera and one or two Olympus lenses depending on my photographic intentions for the day. I do change my lenses occasionally when necessary but quite like to choose my lens for the anticipated job and work within the parameters of that lens for the occasion.... I also carry a blower, micro fibre cloth and brush for the lens.. I usually use a Black Rapid cross body strap for security...

Feedback

The photo is a close-up of a leaf spring so it is fairly generic of an engineering type shot. Light and Focus are always important issues especially in dim conditions and so a fast lens is useful. Composition is the other key element, in this image, I was aiming to make a feature of the question mark which was my interest and the red colour was the essential element which makes the image for me.
