Location
The photo was taken in Nova Scotia in Antigonish County on the Northumberland Strait.Time
The photo was shot around 11 am. I arrived in the area before 10 am. At that time the sea was calm and the sun shining. Soon an ensuing wind kicked up the sea and waves as storm clouds rolled in. When the waves began breaking over the rocks, I moved closer and took several shots. I attribute capturing this final image to a combination of luck, patience and being prepared to shoot when the timing looked rightLighting
I was fortunate with the lighting because the storm clouds rolled in creating an ideal flat light eliminating any chance of sun flares ruining the moment before the rain came. I soon had to retreat to my car to avoid being soaked by the downpour.Equipment
I shot this on my Canon EOS 600 D camera using a CanonEF-S 18-200mm lens. The exposure details were 40mm focal length. 1/125 second @ f5.6, 100 ISO.Inspiration
The combination of a classic lighthouse, storm clouds, and waves crashing over rocks all came together at just the right moment. I was most fortunate to be in the right place at the perfect time and ready to capture the moment.Editing
I shoot all photos in the Raw format and process my images through Lightroom and Photoshop. I have a few 3rd party plug-ins I also use when needed. I do all work on my photos at home. I only use a professional photo lab to print my finished images. In my camera bag
Generally, I like to travel light. My Canon camera and 18-200mm lens are versatile enough to give me many shooting options. I also have a bipod and a lightweight tripod. My only additional accessory is a Canon strobe light.Feedback
My best advice is to be prepared and anticipate possible changes in weather and lighting conditions. Be patient and study the scene for best and variable vantage points. I will often start from a distant viewpoint and move closer and explore different angles. Always try to be aware of your background and foreground. Use the natural setting to your advantage when possible.
