According to Greek legend Aesop lived between 550 and 620 BC and wrote hundreds of fables for children. There is debate as to whether or not he really existed. His most famous story is about a hare and a tortoise. Supposedly the hare had been ridiculing a tortoise over his slowness. Fed up by the hare's constant belittling, the tortoise decides to challenge him to a race. Seeing this as an easy win the hare accepts. Before long the hare has got so far ahead in the race he decides to wile away some of his lead time by napping. Unfortunately for him, he falls into a deep sleep, only to discover when he wakes up that the tortoise has passed him and won the race.
According to Lord Dunsany that is not really what happened. In 1915 he published "The True History of the Tortoise and the Hare". In his version, the hare is said to have realized the absurdity of the challenge and refuses to participate. The obstinate tortoise does the race anyway and ends up winning by default.
