What a great shot of the Pictured Rocks area with nice, bright colors. None of my photos came out as well. Congratulations on your People's Choice Challenge win!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. There are over 100 miles of hiking trails in the park but the best way to see these natural wonders in the Summer is by boat! Tour boats, pontoons, motor boats and Kayaks are all available in Munising, Michigan.

Time

We decided to go in the morning so the sun would be behind the trees and not shining on the camera lens or create too many shadows on the rock bluffs. This worked but if I do it again I would choose to shoot just before sunset to have the yellow light accentuate the color in the stone.

Lighting

See above. Pictured Rocks gots its name from the streaks of mineral stain that decorate the 50-200 ft sandstone cliffs along the shore! Stunning colors occur when the groundwater oozes out of cracks in the stone and runs down the face. The mineral iron creates red and orange, copper creates blue and green, manganese creates brown and black and limonite creates white. These are the most common colors and these colors change when they are wet or the lighting is different!

Equipment

I was using a Sony a7iii with a Sony FE 70-300 mm G OSS lens without a tripod or flash. The exposure was 1/80 of a second at f16 at 1000 iso at the 70 mm focal length. I was shooting in silent burst shutter mode and this Is one of six shots.

Inspiration

I took 1375 photos that day so I would be lying if I said this was an inspired photo! It did stand out as one of my final 36 photos that I chose to represent my day at Pictured Rocks.

Editing

All my photos are imported directly from the Sony 128 GB SD XC II card into Adobe Lightroom in RAW format only. I review all of the photos and then process the the chosen ones in Lightroom first and then edit a copy in Photoshop with Camera RAW and then touch up.

In my camera bag

In addition to the 70-300 zoom I also carry a Sony FE 24-105 mm G OSS and a FE 90 mm f2.8 macro G OSS. I have HMC UV filter on all lens and I carry ND and Circular Polarizing filers. I also carry a Nikon D500 with a Tamron 150-600 mm zoom for birds when I am driving or hiking. Because of the weight I usually don’t carry everything when hiking. Most of the time I have a tripod and monopod in the car but I prefer to shoot handheld.

Feedback

Use burst shutter as you will have more chances of success! Make the investment in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop! First you will swear a lot as you learn how it works and then you will say you couldn’t live without it! I have had it for two years now and I can not believe how much it’s changed my sales!
