Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. This Great Gray Owl came to Minnesota from Canada during the Winter looking for food. Voles are their food of choice and the voles run in little tunnels under the snow. The Great Gray Owls have great hearing and can hear the voles under the snow. This Owl dived into the soft snow catching the vole and eating it in one big gulp.
Time
This was taken in the late afternoon just before dark. This is the Great Gray Owls favorite time to hunt.
Lighting
Late afternoon light.
Equipment
This was taken Handheld using a Nikon d7100 and a Tamron 150-600 mm Zoom. I have sold that equipment and now use a Nikon d500 with a Nikon 200-500 Zoom.
Inspiration
I search and find Owls and other large birds year round. On this particular day, we had traveled to the Sax-Zim Bog, in Northern Minnesota, which is a well known birding area. We had not found any Great Grays in the Bog but spotted this large female on the way home. We watched her hunt for about 20 minutes with two successful kills!
Editing
I process in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon d500 with a Nikon 200-500 Zoom and 1.4x converter for Wildlife. I use a Sony a7iii With a Sony 24-105mm G for Landscape, Sony 70-300mm G, Sony 90mm MAcro and a 14mm Rokinon for Astro photography.
Feedback
Owl photography is very addictive. You will spend a lot of time looking for them and when you find one it gives you a real adrenaline rush. Talk to the people in your area who photograph birds. Many of them will help you and others will keep the bird locations private.
