Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken very close to the Goðafoss waterfall in iceland. Just a few hundred meters down stream.

Time

The photograph was taken very much midnight.

Lighting

The main goal was to capture the water fall and the Aurora Boreales in the same shot. The Aurora was not so perfectly alligned with the Goðafoss so i kept walking down stream and found these beautiful rapids the went perfectly with the Aurora. The rock formation is so nicly visible s because i shed some light with a flashlight on it from the side during the exposure. Its called Light Painting.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 6D which i was using at the time. My settings where Aperture f/3.5?ISO 1600?Shutter 30/1?Focal Length 18/1?

Inspiration

When you see pictures of Iceland the Aurora Boreales is always featured. Then you see some iconic photographs of all these waterfalls. For me it was clear that i wanted something similar but not the same. So i was looking for a shot that has both in it. Water and Aurora and some rockformation or mountain.

Editing

There is not much post processing done. Just some tones, contrast and cropping.

In my camera bag

Always have a camera! In addition i usually carry some remote triggers and a tripod to get away from the camera once everything is set. For me night photogrpahy is the thing, so i will always have a flashlight and headlamp in my bag. That helps to light up the area and light paint the spots that i want the focus to be on.

Feedback

For the night i love to use some wide angle lens (possibly F1.4 or 2.8) and of course some sort of full format camera for the dynamic. That helps to have the flexibility to get what you need, like stars millkyway and the Aurora Boreales even if it is not so strong as it was for me in this shot.
