The composite images were taken in two places, in a studio in San Leandro and at the sunset overlook parking lot at Fremont Peak State Park (both in California)Time
The picture of the dancer, Poppyseed Dancer, was taken about 1pm in a studio. The sunset picture was taken about 5m before sunset.Lighting
The lighting on the dancer was an overhead light to bring out some of her hair and grid lights on both sides pointing inwards towards her at about 30 degrees. If I do this again I'd like the hair light to be a bit brighter.Equipment

I wanted to combine the beauty of dance with the beauty of a sunset. I tried several versions and this worked better than the others.Editing
Images were loaded into photoshop and the image of the dancer was roughly cut out. Then I processed each image for brightness, contrast, etc. The top merge (the dancer) was set to "Screen" (let the brighter pixels through) and a mask was used to flout out the few places that needed it (i.e. where the dancer was). Normally what is in my bag is what I need for the current shoot. For the dance pictures I take a camera, Pocket Wizard, and spare batteries and memory cards. For astrophotography I bring a barn door tracker on a heavy tripod to counter the Earth's rotation and a selection of lenses, depending on my astrophotography goal for the night.Feedback
There are two different captures here, dance and sunset --For capturing dance work closely with the dancer. Get their inputs, show them the work as you go. --For Astrophotography be very careful and methodical. It is easy to make mistakes in the dark and astrophotography shows the faults of cameras and lenses more than any other kind of photography. And shooting the sun around sunset can be a great start to a night of astrophotography, doing it carelessly can burn out your camera or even your eyeballs. Please be very careful.
