Location
This photo was taken at Gibbs Gardens, just north of Atlanta, GA. It is a lovely private set of gardens developed by the owner of a large landscaping company. There are various gardens, this was in the Japanese garden.Time
I had taken students on a field trip to the gardens to draw and take photographs in the late fall. At first we were feeling disappointed because the day was very drizzly and overcast. We arrive here just after they opened in the morning and this photo was taken approximately a half hour after arriving.Lighting
It was a really dreary day, which allowed the colors to be really saturated and not washed out. There was just enough lighting to create lovely reflections in the water.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100, no tripod simply handheld. The camera probably had one of their lenses on at the time, my 50mm 1.4 or 35-70mm, or my 24mm. All of my lenses are old, autofocus, from my film camera days. Making them 30years old, but wonderfully built and because of their size light to carry all day.Inspiration
The reflection and vibrant colors of the trees, the way the green pine was framed by the reds, and the variety of textures. With the overhanging branch in the foreground, the water, curve of the pond in the middle and tall trees in the background made this feel very tranquil and special.Editing
I always do minor adjustments in Photoshop, levels, curves, and minor sharpening. Not often I do much post processing. When I do a lot of corrections or processing I want it to feel overdone, really exaggerated. I’m one of those photographers that doesn’t get rid of freckles, wrinkles, runaway telephone lines, etc. in their images. Not interested in changing history, but recording it.In my camera bag
Usually have Nikon D7100, 35-70, 70-210, 24, and 50mm lenses. Lens wraps for each lens and lens cleaner and a cloth, several sd cards and extra batteries. Sometimes a pad of paper and pencil or pen. All my lenses are old auto focus lenses from the 70s and 80s.Feedback
This is a wonderful location, I have to say the photos I took this dreary day with my NIKON D7100 worked because of my camera settings. I set the Aperture of 14.5, ISO at 100 too keep the grain down with all the texture in this image and set the speed at as slow as I could hold it still (1/100) without something to brace on and no tripod. Something that was interesting that day is there were lots of photographers with much better equipment there, all with tripods, shooting close ups. What I loved was capturing the big picture and riot of color.
