Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Family room in my home in Sandy Springs, GA. Daisy was sitting with me as I was reading, it was chilly and she let me wrap her up in my blanket as she sat on the hassock at my feet.

Time

Taken late in the afternoon, 4-5 eastern time in the late winter.

Lighting

Shot without a flash but with the light from an incandescent lamp with a 250 watt reading bulb and window light.

Equipment

This was taken with my Apple IPad Air 2, handheld.

Inspiration

Seldom does Daisy Mae let me wrap her up in a blanket, she is very independent. This was such a a unique opportunity, I could run for my camera, so I used what I had at hand.

Editing

I airdropped the photo to my Mac mini and used Adobe Photoshop to convert the photo to black and white, and did minor editing, levels, color cast and a tiny bit of sharpening.

In my camera bag

My normal go to cameras are a Nikon D90 and a Nikon D7100. I don't own any modern lenses, all my lenses were my original lenses used with my Nikon film camera. They are all auto focus Nikons, 35-70, 70-210, 50mm 2.4, and a Sigma 300mm and macro lens. Not a fancy bag of equipment, but dependable. I also use a Manfroto tripod and monopod.

Feedback

What I love about photographs is to capture images that don't feel posed, but feel like a second look at a wonderful moment, they tell a story. That's why I sho this with my IPad, had I gone to get my camera the moment would have passed. When shooting people and animals I don't try to pose them but hang around them until they feel comfortable enough and trust me, when the person you are trying to photo trusts you they let their real personality show, they drop their guard. I never use a flash. If the lighting isn't perfect I rather correct when editing. The most important thing to me is to shoot what you love, your connection with the subject will come through.
