The photo was taken on my first trip to Iceland. We were driving from Reykjavik to Arnarstapi, going all around Snæfellsnes peninsula. I spotted these ruins from the passenger seat, nearing Arnastapi, and we pulled over to do little exploring.Time
It was nearing the end of the day in September, the sun was starting to set but there was just enough light to make the colors in the clouds dance.Lighting
The only light here is coming from the setting sun. I wanted to have a little bit of the peeking sky showing, to give the effect that a storm was coming.Equipment
This image was shot handheld with Canon 6D, with a Sigma 24-105mm 1:4 -lens.Inspiration
I find something hauntingly beautiful about abandoned places and ruins. There was absolutely no one around, and this scene was just waiting by the quiet road. What got me even more was the sky changing. In Iceland, the weather can change every ten minutes, and I loved that the clouds showed just a bit of the sky not to make the image too heavy.Editing
Even though the natural light was sending a gloomy vibe, I wanted to make the image even more dramatic and dream-like. I also wanted to tone down with the sharpness, to add even more dreaminess, maybe like you're either about to enter a nightmare, or stepping out of it. Adobe Lightroom is my absolute favorite for working on my photos, so I tweaked the adjustments for this look.In my camera bag
The body I am working with right now is the amazing Canon 6D. I love the quality and versatility of Sigma 24-105mm 1:4, so that is the lens I usually start out with. The other lens I always pack with me is the Canon 50mm 1:4, the bokeh is something that I absolutely love and it is such an easy and fun lens. For possible zooming I pack Canon's 70-300mm 1:4. It is light, has a nice amount of zoom and works quite fast. I also have couple grey filters with me at all times: Hoya's Prond 64 and 500 filters. Also, always pack an extra battery and a memory card, just in case.Feedback
Iceland is landscape/nature photographer's dream. You definitely should bring something wider and the .. filters with a tripod, the waterfalls are beautiful and give a chance to play with shutter-speed. What I also suggest is to travel around by your own car, then you can stop wherever you feel like and explore sights that appeal to you. Also, make sure you have something to survive the rain. It can happen anytime.
