Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken by a golf-course in Helsinki, trying to hurry not to agitate any of the players and also not to get hit my any flying balls.

Time

One of the difficult sides for being a photographer in Finland and not owning a studio is that the daylight is close to nonexistent many months of the year. Same goes for the glorious colors of Autumn that tend to pass by too quickly in Helsinki. We were taking advantage of the soon setting sun last Fall, this image got created around 3pm.

Lighting

The only light here is natural light, I love how her eye catches the sky’s reflection and how the leaves absorb the light with their bright colors.

Equipment

This image was shot handheld with Canon EOS 6D, using Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art -lens.

Inspiration

I wanted to showcase the beautiful colors of Autumn leaves that matched so well with the model’s eye color, they’re like a continuum of each other, nature within us. I picked the spot because of the colors and wanted to capture something a bit more mysterious, hence I wanted the model to be almost completely hidden.

Editing

Post-processing was quite light with this image: I brightened the colors some, smoothed the model’s skin lightly and brightened everything the light hit, all done in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

My collection is rather small, so my bag isn’t too difficult to drag around. I always have my Canon EOS 6D, Canon 50mm 1.8 and Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art with me. Occasionally I also grab the Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art along if I know I have enough space to move around. I also always bring a plastic bag, extra battery and extra memory cards, just in case.

Feedback

You really do not need much for a similar image - simply natural light, a camera, a lens, a model and to find a spot where leaves are hanging low enough to be reached. Depending on your color-scheme, you have to time the shoot so the nature is at the stage you want it to be in, like during the Fall for this particular image.
