In the paradise that is Michigan's Upper Peninsula, anyone traveling along US2, which runs along the southern coast of the U.P. -- the northern shores of Lake Michigan -- is treated to magnificent scenery for hours. For much of the drive, the road is mere yards from sandy shores, but at Cut River, the elevation changes. A cantilevered steel deck bridge stretches across the gorge carved into the landscape, at the bottom of which flows the shallow Cut River before it empties into the Great Lake. If a visitor has the time to stop, he may gaze out at the sea of green trees on either side of the bridge, or, for an even larger reward, hike down the 231 steps, tiptoe past the wooden door labeled "T. Troll" under the bridge, and splash in the clear water surrounded by lovely scenery at the mouth of the stream.
