The skirmish lasted only seconds before one of the rhinos backed away. About ten minutes earlier they had been given some fresh hay and a number of carrots. Rhinos really like carrots, and tend to eat them first. When almost all were gone one of the rhinos made a move to take possession of what remained which sparked the sharp response.
They are part of an experiment to save the Northern white rhino, a subspecies that is so endangered that only two females survive. Sperm collected from the last surviving male will be used to fertilize eggs collected from the two female rhinos and then be re-implanted.
The rhinos are being cared for under strict guard protection in a 700 acre (2.8 sq. km) Endangered Species Enclosure at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.
