Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my home studio, which prior to becoming a studio, was actually my dining room.

Time

I think it was sometime in the afternoon. But in this case the time was irrelevant as this was shot using strobes with no ambient light included.

Lighting

There was one large round soft box to camera left and no other fill light was used. i wanted this to be a moody shot.

Equipment

I used my canon 5D with 70-200mm lens ant 90mm focal length for this shot. I did not need to use a tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to practice doing portraiture and met this lovely young lady who agreed to model for me. The clothes she is wearing were my own.

Editing

In post I made the image even moodier than it actually was by darkening the background and increasing contrast overall. I played a little with colour to achieve the look I wanted, which was a little cinematic. I also added a subtle texture.

In my camera bag

I don't carry a lot of equipment with me. Normally I take spare cards and batteries and a second lens. Sometimes I will take a tripod. It really depends on what I am shooting, but generally the less I have to carry around, the more comfortable I am taking shots.

Feedback

If you do not own strobes, use a constant light source. Tungsten light gives beautiful results in its own right. Practice makes perfect. Do not be too quick to discard your 'bad' images. Study them before you delete them to try to avoid making the same mistakes over and over.
