Behind The Lens

Location

My photograph was made off the foothills of the Superstition Mountains.

Time

I made this photograph wee early morning of Wednesday, January 31st. 2018; at 6am,

Lighting

Super Blue Blood Moon_this was a celestial event. The moon was setting and I had just enough light from passing cars, and neighborhood house light to illuminate the saguaro.

Equipment

Nikon D850. with a Nikkor 28-300 lens. Other equipment was a Gitzo XL carbon fiber tripod with a 3 way tilt head.

Inspiration

The celestial phenomena "The Super Blue Blood Moon" reflects just how lucky I am to witness this in my lifetime. I wanted to provide a sense of place, photographed the moon setting next to the Saguaro cactus.

Editing

I made some shadow adjustments to bring out the Saguaro.

In my camera bag

I'm a large format film photographer which is my love. I have a 4x5 modified Wista with 2 lenses, one a bit short, and one a bit long. Of course my Gitzo tripod is my go to. I use a Pentax linear spot meter.

Feedback

Depth of field, exposure, and composition are important elements in this photograph. I utilized Hyperfocal Distance for the Depth of Field. I used my Pentax spot meter to measure the moon, Saguaro to determine exposure values and placements along with determining the f-stop for sufficient depth of field. It is a wonderful quiet in the morning before life begins for the day. Enjoy the sounds of nature, the smell of the earth, and what your interpretation is for your subject.
