Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this frog photo in a forested area outside of Isperih, Bulgaria. A friend and myself were driving aound on a "photo day". we stopped at this area for no particular reason other than it was a nice area with plenty of trees.

Time

It was October, midmorning when this photo was created. The forest canopy kept the lighting even and shadowed. The 1/80th of a second exposure made this handheld shot a little difficult but luckily the frog was willing to hold still even thought I was only inches from it's nose. I was seated cross-legged on the ground infront of the frog, using my knees to stabilize the camera.

Lighting

The lighting for this shot is just the existing light provided by the sun through the forest canopy. I didn't have a flash with me in the forest this day and there wasn't any direct light to reflect at the frog. The frog was on the forest floor so I got down on it's level to get a good perspective view and to help stabilize the D500 camera in the low light. Luckily this camera has exceptional low-light capabilities at higher ISO so I pushed this to ISO 1000

Equipment

The equipment here is simple, a Nikon D500 body with the Nikon 105 mm f2.8 prime lens. Often when I am carrying just a camera and single lens I use this setup. The 105mm lens is supremely capable of wonderful clear photos in most settings. This lens also creates super bokeh when this is desired. I wanted the background of the photo to imply where we were without taking away from the frog as our subject

Inspiration

The frog itself inspired this photo. Wandering nature is one of my favorite pastimes and photographing my observations is always time well spent. Another reason for the shots of this frog was to give my friend some experience with nature photography. He prefers to shoot images in his city and spends little time in the wild.

Editing

There wasn't any post-processing done for this photo. I don't yet know how to use processing software so I use my photos as they are created in camera.

In my camera bag

My kit contains a Nikon D810, which has been my goto setup with a Nikkor 105 mm f2.8 lens. Recently I upgraded my second body to a Nikon D500. I bought this body for it's lowlight capabilities. Normally the Nikkor 16-80mm f2.8-4 lens resides on the D500 and is the setup I carry when I want to travel light. For those special occasions where I need a wide view the Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 fills the void and a Tamron 150-600mm f5-6.3 helps me reach out long and far for those subjects that don't like us getting close or the animals that might cause severe bodily harm. The Nikon speedlight system works wonders for all my supplemental lighting and I carry a 12" collapsible reflector for modifying existing light. I use a Manfrotto tripod when needed.

Feedback

If I were to give my thoughts on creating such a photo I would first say get out where people are uncommon. After that, learn to tread lightly. these animals are quick to leave when a large creature approaches. LOOK, take the time to search all around you. When I found this frog, my friend had no idea it was near us. I had to point it out to him. Spend as much time in nature as you can so you can develop an eye for what lives in your area. Once you figure out your area, this information and experience will help you wherever your travels take you. I guess the last bit of advice I would offer would be wear clothes you can get dirty so you can crawl around where such creatures spend their time
