Staying late enough one night at the 2017 Utah State Fair and hiding between some rides I was able to catch both of these rides in motion at the same time. I have decided to play with long exposures and this experiment is my first attempt, this shot being the best of the series.

This photo was shot at the Utah State Fair in 2017. I had been wanting to shoot some long exposure images of things in motion and the rides at the Fair seemed a great subject.Time
I had to wait until the sun had completely set before making this photo. I knew I would need a super long exposure to get the blurred light I saw in my imagination for this shot.Lighting
The lighting for this shot was only that provided by the Fairgrounds. The ride lights and the midway lights. The blurred light effect was created by a 20 second exposure and f-stop of 22. I wanted everything but the moving rides to be in focus as much as possibleEquipment
I used a Nikon D500 with the Nikon 16-80mm 2.8-4 lens to capture the image. This setup was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod to make sure there was no induced motion for the long exposure. The focal length was set to 16mm so I could get both rides in the frameInspiration
The inspiration for this photo was my desire to capture a long exposure of the rides at the Fair. I thought this would be a great setting to increase my skills with long exposures. I have always enjoyed the carnival settings around Fairs and Resort Parks like Disneyland.Editing
The only post-processing done for this photo was to increase the sharpness a little. I try hard to do most of my work in camera this is how I learned back in the days of film only cameras. In my camera bag
My kit contains a Nikon D810, which has been my goto setup with a Nikkor 105 mm f2.8 lens. Recently I upgraded my second body to a Nikon D500. I bought this body for it's lowlight capabilities. Normally the Nikkor 16-80mm f2.8-4 lens resides on the D500 and is the setup I carry when I want to travel light. For those special occasions where I need a wide view the Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 fills the void and a Tamron 150-600mm f5-6.3 helps me reach out long and far for those subjects that don't like us getting close or the animals that might cause severe bodily harm. The Nikon speedlight system works wonders for all my supplemental lighting and I Manfrotto tripod when needed.Feedback
If I could offer any advice for such an image it would be patience and politeness. Patience, because I waited 20 minutes for both of the rides to be at full speed at the same time. So we have to be willing to be ready at the right time and be able to wait for the correct conditions. Politeness, because I had to ask Fair attendees not to walk in front of the camera while the aperture was open and to carefully explain to the carnival staff why I was standing in between the rides where people didn't normally walk and I was not intending to do anything malicious.
