Photo session with cellist Antonis Pratsinakis in the studio. An LED strip with changing colours was taped to the bow. While the cellist played in the dark, the camera was moved horizontally, thereby visualising his music. A flash was fired at the end of the exposure. Inspired by Stephen Orlando.

Location
This photo was taken in my studio in Rijswijk, near The Hague, where I met with the Cellist Antonis Pratsinakis, who was in need of photos for his new project.Time
As my studio cannot be properly darkened, we had to wait until after sunset. We started with a more "standard" shoot, continued with the LED strip and finished off with a light brush. I think we finished after midnight, but it was a fun session and clearly worth it!Lighting
I taped an LED strip to the bow, the battery cable runs through the sleeve of Antonis Pratsinakis, the Cellist. The LED automatically changes colour with time. While he played, the camera was panned horizontally on a tripod during a long exposure, thereby visualising his music. At the end of the exposure, i.e. on the second curtain, a flash with honeycomb was fired to expose the cellist. The grid / honeycomb is important, otherwise light would be shed on the background. In addition to the black studio background, I added a black cloth to the side of the background, which is necessary as the camera was panned during the exposure.Equipment
In addition to the LED strip, the flash and the extended black background, I used a Nikon D800 on a sturdy tripod, probably with a Tamron 24-70mm.Inspiration
I've seen something similar by Stephen Orlando, which I found highly inspiring. My payment, a bottle of rum (thanks Antonis!) added to the inspiration...Editing
Some minor general and local exposure correction. In my camera bag
What I normally use depends on the shoot. In the studio I typically rely on a Nikon D800 with either Tamron 24-70mm, Nikon 85mm, Tamron 70-200mm. Further triggers, model releases, batteries.Feedback
Try to have the room as dark as possible, a black background helps. If possible, have some space between your model and the background. Get a bottle of rum!
