Location
I was with some friends on a holiday in the city of Sinemorets, on the south coast of the Bulgarian Black Sea. So I knew about the "Stone Ships" location, which is known to be a beautiful spot for sightseeing, jumping in the water from the cliffs, and of course - those unbelievable sunsets!Time
The photo is taken on August, 13th, 2017. It was Sunday, the last day of our holiday. So we just went to the "Stone Ships" to have some fun for the last time, so everyone was doing everything possible to just extend the day as much as we can, before jumping back in the cars for the way home.Lighting
Since it was right on the sunset, the rocks looked amazing with the warm colors just on the left sides. I really wanted to catch that contrast - where half of the rocks are in the shadows and the other half were highlighted. The position, where I took the photo was a little in the shadows, so the foreground stones were actually bluish. All the colors where so different and intensive - it was quite a blessing to be there in this exact moment.Equipment
The photo is taken with Nikon D7000 with a Sigma 17-50 lens. Also, because of the intense lighting, I used two gradient Cokin filters to soften the sky and the water. Since I didn't carry a big tripod with me, I used a little Gorilla DSLR tripod (I was really lucky there wasn't any wind that day :) )Inspiration
I really enjoy those moments of the day when I am on a holiday with some friends - the hours between 17-20:00. It's the part of the day, when everybody is taking a rest from the day and gets ready for the evening and night partying. So everyone does what he likes - some are taking a rest, others go around for a walk. I like to go around with the camera and find that scenery, which amazes me at the given moment - it's like a spontaneous inspiration that hits me so hard that I just can't resist it. The stone ships was one of those spectacular moments - when I saw the colors, I wanted to go down the rocks and capture this magical scene.Editing
Most of the time, I'm using Lightroom for post-processing. In the "Stone Ships" case, I wanted to pop out the colors and contrast with just some little tweak on the tint for those incredible purple colors in the skyIn my camera bag
I carry my loyal Nikon D7000 with a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 lens. I also, always carry a Samyang 85 f/1.4 prime lens, which I use for bokeh games and photographing people and objects, as the Samyang gives me incredible sharpness and is fantastic for DOF experiments :) I try to always have at least the small gorilla tripod, so I can play around with a ND filter, but also I am equipped with a Hama standing tripod. Along with the ND filter, I carry around the Cokin gradient filters pack when I feel artistic :)Feedback
When shooting sunsets and sunrises, I used to always hurry, so that I don't miss the colors. But what I found out is that actually it is more important to find a good location for a great composition and just try to capture the current moment in all of it's natural glory as nature gives it to you. So my advice would be that we should always take some time to first see the scene with our eyes, to feel the scene and to find our own perspective. When we take our time and be calm, the result can be fantastic!
