Not long ago, I’ve stumbled upon the “Brutalist Architecture” term describing the architectural style of full lack of concern to aesthetics, comfort or ease. This is just a part of the view from my balcony - the next to mine block of flats, strictly following the rules of brutalism architecture

Behind The Lens

Location

That's the next block of flats in my neighborhood in Sofia, which I actually see everyday through the window of my living room :)

Time

Midday. The block is higher than all surrounding buildings and is really interesting throughout the day, as you see how the light changes on its side.

Lighting

This is one of the very few minimalistic photos I've made using midday washout bright colors. I'm always stunned by photos in this sort of category, as they look so creative to me. I find it really hard to do such a photograph, not only in terms of technique, but also in terms of expression and scene.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Nikon D7000 with the 85mm Samyang lens

Inspiration

My actual inspiration was how the building was lighted that moment, with the clear and washout sky as a background. Interestingly enough, taking the shot I remember that I've just read about the term "brutalism" not long before taking the shot. Brutalism is a term, used to describe mainly soviet, but not only architecture, which does not follow any aesthetics, but rather gray pragmatics and loads of concrete.

Editing

Noting more than the usual Lightroom adjustments

In my camera bag

Now, I'm using a Nikon D610 as camera body, primarily shooting landscapes with a Tamron 15-30 as a wide lens and a 24-70 when I need a bit narrower scene. Along with the wide Tamron, I'm carrying a NiSi filter system with polarizer and ND/GND filters. Again recently I got an amazing wide-macro lens - the Laowa 15mm Macro along with a Helios 44 to play with

Feedback

The minimal photography genre is quite astonishing to me. I'm always jaw dropping when I see a good minimalistic photograph and I how far I am off those works of art for now, but every time I take one that I like, it feels so rewarding! I still think that this genre is where creativity is at it's highest, so my advice is to try it now and then with every object that comes to mind!
