Measures from 30 to 38 cm. and weighs 350 to 550g. Gray-brown bird, with wings and back of darker tones and whitish abdomen and ridge; white throat and forehead ocher face and neck; thick beak; it has no white wings like other loons. In the reproductive age it has a black band around the beak, the black throat and the gray neck.
