The heron is a pelecaniform bird of the Ardeidae family.
It inhabits rivers and lakes with forested banks, in addition to marshy areas, feeding on mudslides. It is usually solitary or, to a lesser extent, in groups of 2 or 3 individuals.
Almost all Brazilian regions, except in the Northeast and Rio Grande do Sul. Also found from Panama to Colombia, Bolivia and Paraguay.
