Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Truro City, England. It was a local organised shoot. I am a keen enthusiast photographer and a few years ago i joined a local club. The club is a good fun club to belong too and organises many different things locally

Time

This shot was taken in Late November (as i remember) it worked quite well that time of the year and by coinsidence the council were putting all the Christmas lights up in the street the night we did the shoot. We did annoy them and use there lights for a few things while they were setting their work up. The shot was taken around 2000hours and we tried several places and poses, this was actually in a shop doorway. (door was closed as was the shop)

Lighting

The Street was very dark with only a few street lights and the few christmas lights that were being put up, we did carry one light with a soft box which i believe was placed to the right of the model

Equipment

For the model shoot i knew it was going to be dark and i knew we were never going to be very far away from the models so i kept it simple with little to carry so it was just My Canon 60d as it has the flip out screen if i wanted to shoot from a low or high point and attached to that was my Nifty fifty (50mm 1.8)

Inspiration

Part of the model shoot was an exercise in lighting the model correctly. So we just found random places and posed the model, then got her to make small adjustments to her posture so light fell off better or differently. Then it was getting the camera setup using trial and error to get an image that i liked

Editing

A few sliders were tweaked in camera raw if i remember correctly, but it was pretty much how it came out the camera

In my camera bag

This varies depending on what i'm doing. If it's sport stuff like the motorbikes or airdays i tend to use my 7d2 with my sigma 70-200 or 150-500 on it and may leave my 24-105 on my 60d. If i'm doing landscape stuff i tend to use my 60d with the 10-20mm on it i normally have some nd filters in my bag and a polariser. i also use the canon 100mm l macro lens for some things and i have a decent tripod and a big heavy manfrotto camera pole, i also have a manfrotto travel tripod which is light weight and folds up shorter than my main tripod this was bought because this fits in the top box on my motorbike and i use it when we go on holiday.

Feedback

The best thing that i ever did was join a local club it is full of like minded people who all like different aspects of photography, this makes my own photography better as we all prefer to do certain types of images but when your confronted with new things to yourself you bounce ideas off each other or get help from someone who does this sort of thing a lot. The club i'm in runs 50 weeks a year and runs on wednesday evening but also do things at weekends in splinter groups.
