Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Portreath beach, Harbour it is on the north coast of Cornwall, England

Time

This was taken around 0800hrs at high tide, the coast is very stormy during the winter months and the beach and harbour always takes damage during these month

Lighting

the day it was taken the lighting was very dark natural light from the low cloud and was quite a dreary day

Equipment

the shot was taken handheld with my canon 7d2 with the sigma 70-200 2.8 fitted as that is good for sports, action and low light. I also had a waterproof cover fitted over the camera and lens as i knew sea salt and spray would be in the atmosphere

Inspiration

i knew Portreath harbour and Porthlevan are great places in Cornwall for capturing bad weather and dramatic shots and Portreath is only about 4 miles from my house. It was simply a case of watching the weather forecast for the day that was going to be stormy and windy then matching that with the tide times then hope when you get there you can get a space or the police haven't closed off access to certain parts as flooding happens as well here

Editing

it was lightened up a bit in PS as the sky was naturally dark as that was a reflection of the weather like was at the time, but there wasn't a huge colour contrast in the image so it made sense to flip it to black and white as a lot of the image was just shades of grey. Black and white always make an image with little colour in it to look more attractive

In my camera bag

this depends what im doing and where i am but my usual kit is my Canon 60D get the Sigma 10-20mm on it for landscape type shots. The 7d2 usually gets the 24-105 on it in my bag but then the sigma 70-200 sits beside in the bag. I've recently purchased a Canon 300m f4l and i and really impressed with the sharpness of that and the fact it is very light in weight.i also usually take my tripod which is a Manfrotto 190expro but don't always use it, just depends what i see when i out and about

Feedback

only thing i can suggest to do your homework, read local news for weather reports, check tide times, get a decent and safe spot to shoot from. Waves can wash over the walls and knock you over easily, consider insuring your kit in case of unexpected accidents.
