Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on top of the cliff of the old monastery of the Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc sisters, in a suburb of Quebec called Sillery. It would be difficult to take this photo from this angle today, as the monastery was transformed into a condominium building three years ago and now is a private property. The church in the background is called St-Michel-de-Sillery and testifies to the Irish presence in Quebec, since its construction, between 1852 and 1854, stems from the will of Father Peter Henry Harkin and the art of architect Goodlatte Richardson Browne.

Time

This photo was taken on October, as the colours of the trees show, early in the morning (around 7:00 am). It was a rainy day, very grey, without any sun light to make the colours shine.

Lighting

Nothing special about lighting.

Equipment

The camera used was my Sony a7RII, with a Sigma 70-200mm lens. Tripod, ballhead and a remote shutter release cable as accessories.

Inspiration

In 2017, the year this photo was taken, I was travelling every day for work on the road that one sees on the left of the image. The church, built on the "pointe à Puiseaux", a headland that juts out towards the river, is a very iconic building that stands out on top of the cliff. From seeing it on a daily basis, the need to make this photo was self-evident.

Editing

Yes, but just basic adjustments. No fancy filters or know-hows were used.

In my camera bag

Camera: Sony a7R II Lens: Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 with the Sigma MC-11 adapter; Zeiss 35mm Distagon F1.4; Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55 mm F1.8; Sony 90mm F2.8 Macro, RRS Tripod, FLM CB 58 ballhead, Singh Ray ND filter, remote shutter release cable. The Sigma 70-200mm used for this photo is a first gen lens and is very heavy. This is why I don't carry it very often.
