Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo on the shore of the St-Lawrence River, near a small town called St-Jean-Port-Joli, known for its woodcarver.

Time

As the image shows, the photo was taken at sunset, back in august 2015, around 6:30PM. Since the day was Thursday, I was most certainly on summer holidays, walking on the bank, waiting for the setting sun to create a burning sky. A few days during the summer time, one can admire astonishing sunsets near St-Jean-Port-Joli, almost like if one would be living in the tropics.

Lighting

No on or off camera lighting was used. Only polarizing and graduated ND filters for the sky.

Equipment

Back then, the camera was a Sony a7r, first generation, with a Zeiss 35mm Distagon F1.4. Ballhead was a FLM CB58 with a OSN OS 364 LA carbon fiber tripod. I used a Zeiss circular polarizing filter along with a Singh Ray graduated ND filter, mostly to get the sky well exposed, while not underexposing the river bank.

Inspiration

As I said, St-Jean-Port-Joli is a good place to go along the St-Lawrence River to see incredible sunsets. That day, I was not disappointed, as the sky gave me beautiful yellow and orange tones.

Editing

Yes, but nothing fancy, here. As it was a single shot, I post processed it to correct exposure, tones, colours, white balance, etc.

In my camera bag

The equipment I use now is the following: Sony a7r II Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 with the Sigma MC-11 adapter; Zeiss 35mm Distagon F1.4; Zeiss 55mm T* F1.8; Sony 90mm F2.8 Macro FLM CB58 ballhead RRS carbon fiber tripod Lee Seven5 filter holder with Zeiss circular polarizing filters and Singh Ray Graduated ND filters. Accessories like remote shutter release cable.

Feedback

No special advice. A good way to start is just to know the places where you can create the image you have in mind.
