Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Mount Stewart in Northern Ireland. It is a National Trust property and we, my Sister, my Husband and myself were on holiday. We come to Northern Ireland once a year to visit my Aunt. This is a fabulous place to visit, the grounds are extensive and so colourful and well kept. The lake is one of my most favourite places, peaceful, tranquil, colourful and with quite a few water fowl to watch.

Time

The image was taken around 1pm on 10th May 2013, it was a wet rainy day but we had decided we wanted to be out in the fresh air. It was well worth the visit. The gardeners were busy planting out and tidying the gardens so there were a few places we couldn't go.

Lighting

The lighting wasn't good as it was a dull day but the colours and reflections in the lake were good. I moved up the hill, for a bit of height, to enable me to get as good a view of the lake as possible.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon, EOS 450D, the lens 28-135mm and the camera was hand held.

Inspiration

I love landscapes and find, with water involved, there is always reflections, especially on a still day. This was the case as we walked round the lake. I choose a view point that would include a lead in to the picture. The bridge would point the viewer towards the lake and its surrounding beautifully coloured trees, bushes, reeds and unfolding ferns and of course, the lovely reflections in the water.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW so I did use post-processing, in photoshop I enhanced the sharpness and colour and I probably used a filter but it has been a while since I took this particular image. I was very satisfied with the finished product!

In my camera bag

The contents in my bag can vary, it depends on what I set out to do. Essentials are, Camera body, these days EOS 70D. Lens, wide angle, 10-18mm, 28-135mm lens used for zoom and macro, I also carry a 50mm lens, never know when you might need one. I also have but don't always carry a Canon 70-300mm lens, it is heavy! Cleaning cloth for the lenses, Hahnel, remote control, a couple of filters and a spare battery. I also take a tripod.

Feedback

Always be prepared, you might just come upon something incredibly beautiful. I am not a planner, I usually take my camera where ever we go. Some places I love, Mount Stewart is one of them. There are so many awesome things in this world and it is a pleasure if I spend all day taking photographs and only get 1 or 2 that I really like, I have achieved something! I love my photography and I do it as a hobby. Enjoy what you do.
